Should you have seen a cartoon in The New Yorker showing a couple chatting with their travel agent in an office bedecked with posters as the husband grumbles, “I’ll go on a cruise, but not if I’m forced to learn things,“ you may have smiled. If that is your take on a learning adventure, grit your teeth.

To be blunt, we’re talking unforgettable Voyages to Antiquity, and I’m willing to give extra points to any ship that delivers an entertaining, sophisticated cruise with over-the-top chefs and dining-room staff. “Iconic” is an over-used word but it fits Voyages to Antiquity cruises to classical civilizations with a team of expert destination lecturers aboard that feel absolutely inspired. Mosaics and frescos were the prevailing art forms. Before this cruise on the Aegean Odyssey I had little time for them, preferring oil paintings and architecture. Now, thanks to our expert guides, and having seen some of the finest mosaics ever created during the Middle Ages, I feel the humbleness of reformed ignorance.
